Self Supply - Current Status and Next Steps

Self-Supply (Solar and Battery)

Current Status for Eglinton Village Energy

Eglinton Village Energy (Eve) has submitted an Embedded Generation Application to Western Power, which is currently under assessment.

This application is required before solar and battery systems can be connected to the Eve network within the Eglinton Village estate.

Once approved, the application will enable:

  • Eve Opt-In customers solar products, and
  • Self-Supply customers to apply to install their own solar and/or battery systems.

Eve continues to engage regularly with Western Power regarding the progress of this application. At this time, Western Power has not provided a confirmed approval date or estimated timeframe.

As soon as further information becomes available, Eve will communicate this to the community.

Important Notice

Solar and battery systems cannot currently be connected to the Eve network until Western Power approves the Embedded Generation Application submitted for the estate.

Installing, purchasing, or committing to solar or battery systems before approval may result in:

  • connection delays
  • equipment modification requirements
  • additional costs.

Customers should ensure they understand the approval process before proceeding.

Electricity Network Approval

Solar and battery systems can only be connected to an electricity network once approval has been granted by Western Power.

Within the Eglinton Village estate, Eve is the electricity network operator.

This means that all solar and battery systems must receive approval from Eve before they can be connected or energised.

Approval is dependent on technical and operational conditions set by Western Power, who must first approve the Embedded Generation Application submitted for the estate.

Until this approval is received, Eve cannot approve the connection of solar or battery systems to the network.

Why Network Approval Is Required

Electricity networks must operate safely and reliably for all customers.

Solar and battery systems change how electricity flows through the network. Without appropriate controls, these systems can create safety risks and impact network stability.

Approval ensures that:

  • electricity flows remain safe
  • voltage levels remain stable
  • protection systems operate correctly
  • solar exports remain within safe limits.

For this reason, solar and battery systems must meet strict technical requirements before they can be connected to the network.

Applications for Self-Supply

Until Western Power provides final approval of the Embedded Generation Application:

Eve cannot accept, assess, or approve applications for customer-installed solar or battery systems.

This includes applications relating to:

  • solar photovoltaic (PV) systems
  • battery storage systems
  • hybrid systems.

This is necessary because Eve must operate in accordance with Western Power’s technical and operational requirements.

Do Not Connect Systems Yet

Customers must not connect or energise any solar or battery system to the Eve network unless formal approval has been issued by Eve.

Eve strongly advises customers not to commence installation works or commit to equipment purchases until the relevant approvals are in place.

This may include:

  • requesting installation works
  • purchasing equipment
  • entering contracts
  • undertaking installation works.

If You Proceed Before Approval

If a customer chooses to proceed before Western Power has approved the Embedded Generation Application:

  • this is undertaken entirely at the customer’s own risk.

To the extent permitted by law:

  • Eve is not responsible for costs incurred as a result of early installation decisions
  • Eve cannot guarantee that systems installed before approval will comply with final network requirements
  • customers may be required to modify, replace or remove equipment to meet the final approved technical requirements.

Any associated costs would be borne by the customer.

This limitation exists because Eve cannot confirm the following until Western Power approval is granted:

  • allowable inverter capacities
  • export limits
  • network protection settings
  • communications requirements
  • operational controls
  • other technical network constraints.

Advice from Solar Installers

Solar installers operate independently of Eve.

Installers cannot approve connections to the Eve network.

Customers should be aware that:

  • installers may provide general advice regarding solar systems
  • only Eve can approve connection to the Eve network
  • installer advice does not constitute network approval.

Customers should ensure they understand the network approval process before relying on installer advice or entering installation contracts.

Unapproved System Connections

Solar or battery systems must not be connected to or energised on the Eve network without formal approval.

If an unapproved system is found to be connected or energised:

  • Eve may disconnect the property from the network at the pillar until the system has been safely isolated by a licensed electrical contractor.

This action may be necessary to protect:

  • the safety of customers
  • electrical workers working on the network
  • the integrity and reliability of the electricity network.

Unapproved systems may present a serious safety hazard and may create risks including electric shock or fatality.

Installing a System Before Approval

A licensed electrical contractor may install a solar or battery system prior to approval provided that the system remains electrically isolated and is not energised or connected to the Eve network.

All installation works must comply with:

  • applicable electrical safety legislation
  • Australian Standards
  • Building and Energy requirements.

Customers should seek advice directly from their licensed electrical contractor regarding installation practices.

Preliminary Information

Any information provided by Eve prior to Western Power issuing approval:

  • is general or indicative in nature
  • may change once formal approval is received
  • must not be relied upon for system design, procurement, contracting or installation decisions.

Eve is not responsible for decisions made by customers or installers based on preliminary or indicative information.

What Happens Once Approval Is Received

Once Western Power approves the Embedded Generation Application:

  1. Eve will notify customers who have registered their interest in self-supply.
  2. Eve will provide details of the formal application process and technical requirements.
  3. Customers may then submit a self-supply application for assessment.

All applications will be assessed in accordance with:

  • Western Power technical conditions
  • network safety requirements
  • Eve operational standards.

Electrical Notices and Inspections

Within the Eglinton Village Energy estate:

Eve is the electricity network operator.

All statutory notices relating to solar or battery installation works must therefore be submitted to Eglinton Village Energy, including:

  • Notices of Completion (NOCs)
  • Preliminary Notices.

These notices must not be submitted to Western Power, as Western Power is not the network operator for this estate.

Incorrect submission of notices may result in delays or rejection of the connection process.

Once a system is approved:

  • Eve will arrange inspection by a Building and Energy electrical inspector, and
  • Eve will issue an Approval to Operate once compliance is confirmed.

Customers must also receive an Electrical Safety Certificate from their licensed electrical contractor.

Three-Phase Properties

Properties with a three-phase electrical connection must install a compatible three-phase solar system.

This ensures safe and balanced operation of the electricity network.

Government Rebates and Incentives

Eve does not assess eligibility for, administer, or provide advice regarding:

  • federal or state solar rebates
  • renewable energy incentives
  • battery subsidy programs.

Customers should confirm eligibility directly with:

  • their chosen solar installer, or
  • the relevant government agency.
