Saving costs on your energy bill doesn’t have to be complicated.

Understanding how you use your energy, and empowering yourself with the right information is the first step.

Read your bill to understand where the costs come from and look at the comparison graphs for seasonal impacts or trends. Visit the 'Understanding Your Bill' page on our website for further assistance in reading your bill.
Monitor the known high energy users such as lighting, heating, cooling, refrigeration, pools and spas for habits and lifestyle. Research using websites such as www.energy.gov.au or www.energyrating.gov.au to keep yourself informed.

Simple changes to the way you use energy can reduce the cost of your bill:

Turn off appliances if they are not in use. Appliances make up around 30% of the average Australian household's energy bill. Even an appliance in standby can use energy.
Use natural lighting during the day. Use lamps in the evening.
Use LED bulbs for hardwire lighting. Good quality LED bulbs last longer than halogen bulbs and can use up to 75% less energy.
Look at alternate ways to heat or cool. Heating and cooling make up around 40% of the average Australian household's energy bill. Make sure doors, windows and similar are closed to keep the room warm or cool. Use jumpers, blankets or fans as other ways to heat or cool.
Set a comfortable temperature.. Each degree of heating or cooling increases energy usage by approximately 5-10%. Select a temperature that isn't too low in summer, or too high in winter.
Reduce the time spent on heating water. Heating water makes up around 25% of the average Australian household's energy bill. Run the dishwasher or clothes washer when full. Use cold wash instead of hot wash. Take shorter showers.
